20% Growth for Van Sales in 2010

Great news for the commercial vehicle industry and the economy as a whole – sales of vans up to 3.5t were up 20% year on year. This represents an increase of 36,529 units more than the 186,386 registered in 2009.

So who were the winners and losers?

Most manufacturers increased volume exactly in line with the 20% growth of the market as a whole and consequently market share stayed the same.

Ford were still top dog with 59,488 registrations (52,829) and 26% of the market (28%).

They were followed by the usual pack of Vauxhall (27,417 / 12%), Volkswagen (25,710 / 12%), Mercedes Benz (20,173 / 9%), Citroen (18,074 / 8%), Renault (17,248 / 8%), Peugeot (16,384 / 7%) and Fiat (6,977 / 3%) in that order.

Renault increased volume the most from 9,710 in 2009 to 17,248 in 2010 – an increase of 77% whilst Fiat were up 43% from 4,880 in 2009.

Interestingly Mitsubishi were up 40% whilst Isuzu were up 104% - 2 commercial vehicle manufacturers specialising in 4x4 / Pickups. The pickup is often considered an emotive purchase and not particularly frugal and so it’s perhaps surprising to see such a performance in these austere times.

Nissan , whilst down 7%, can site a lack of supply for 2010 as the Interstar has disappeared (to be replaced by the Nissan NV400) and the Primastar was supposed to be replaced but ultimately continued as the Vivaro/Trafic platform from July onwards.

Iveco were down 6% from 2,791 in 2009 to 2,616 in 2010.
